Cruises leave from the Small Boat Harbour in Port Alfred, taking you up the scenic Kowie River. These cruise trips are one and a half hours in duration and braai trips of approximately four hours – these can also be arranged on request.

Between July and December of every year, the Eastern Cape coastline is frequented by Southern Right Whales and Humpback Whales. These animals glide past the shore; breaching, lobtailing and spy-hopping as onlookers appreciate their antics from the beach.
Boogie boarding, or body boarding, is one of the easiest water sports to learn and master at Kidds Beach and Kelly’s Beach. Simply lie on the board, wait for a wave, kick hard, and ride it to shore. You can also peacefully drift along, carried by the river currents and sea undulations.
The Kap River Nature Reserve is a diverse reserve spanning 670 ha, 28 km East of Port Alfred. The reserve offers something for nature lovers, birding enthusiasts, hikers, mountain bikers and canoeists, thanks to its sub-tropical vegetation, lush forests, two rivers, natural diversity, birds and wild animals.

Rods, reels and bait are supplied – you will be responsible for bringing warm clothing, a hat, sun block, snacks and drinks.
Canoe trails make for an ideal holiday. The Kowie Canoe Trail will lead you approximately 21kms up the river past attractions such as The Old Wreck, Windy Beach, Rabbit Rocks, Cob Hole, Black Rock, The old Mill, The Reef, Ferry Glen, White Rock and on to the Camp at Horseshoe Bend.
If you are the adventurous kind continue a short way past Ebb and Flow where fresh water flows down the Kowie River and into the sea. Look out for sightings of game on the east bank of the river.

The Kowie River is the heart of Port Alfred. It has its source in the hills of the “Grahamstown Heights” from where it flows in a south-easterly direction draining the major part of the Bathurst region, reaching the Indian Ocean through an estuary at Port Alfred.
The Kowie River has something for everyone to enjoy. Love being on the water? Cruise with friends, water ski for thrills, or kayak peacefully. Watch birds and have picnics by the scenic riverbanks. The beautiful spot where the river meets the ocean is a photographer’s dream.
A unique feature of Kelly’s Beach in Port Alfred on the Sunshine Coast is the two viewing decks from which you can view the beach, perhaps spot a whale or two and from which you can observe the most spectacular sunsets if you are passing at that time of day.
The actual beach is at the Kowie River estuary mouth and attracts beachcombers to its fine sand and safe swimming. Previously rated a Blue Flag beach, the beach offers good facilities and provides a lovely day out with the kids. Always take sunblock and plenty of water with you!
Shelly Beach is a picturesque stretch of coastline ideal for family fun, shell collecting, and leisurely relaxation. The calm waters make this a fantastic spot for young children to splash and play safely, while the rock pools teem with marine life just waiting to be explored.
